As we begun making these steps we had peace.

Our family have recently started on a new journey. No, we are not on a road trip! We have been obedient to God’s calling and have begun home schooling our two daughters, at the time of writing aged 7 and 8. Well, when I say that we have been obedient, that is not entirely correct; we could have begun earlier. The problem was that we were waiting for the conditions to be right, but Ecclesiastes 11:4 says, “He who watches the wind [waiting for all conditions to be perfect] will not sow [seed], and he who looks at the clouds will not reap [a harvest]” (Amplified Bible). God impressed on our hearts not to wait any longer, but to begin now; and so my wife and I took the steps necessary to de-register our children from regular school and begin home schooling them. As we begun making these steps we had peace, whereas previously we had had a sense of unease for some time about them going to school. This peace is what Colossians 3:15 is referring to when it says, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts“.

Sending our children to school was the easy option.

You may ask, “Why would God want you to home school your children, what’s wrong with regular school?”, and the truth is that God telling us to do it is reason enough, we didn’t necessarily need to know the reasons why. However God has shown us some reasons why He wants our children to be home schooled. For example, Psalm 1 begins with the words, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly….”; every day my children were going to school and being educated in the counsel of the ungodly. “Oh but Matthew, I know some good Christian teachers.” That’s great, I do too – thank God for good Christian teachers, they are a beacon of light in an increasingly ungodly system. The presence of a Christian teacher though, does not change the fact that the education system itself in most Western Countries is increasingly ungodly. Sending our children to school was the easy option, doing the same thing as everyone one else is always the easy option. But in Christianity, going with the flow is more often than not, the wrong path to take.

The secular education system has become increasingly ungodly.

As I just mentioned, in recent years the secular education system has become increasingly ungodly. Christian values are being sidelined, whilst gender lines are being blurred and homosexual relationships are promoted as being normal. However I believe that whilst there are certainly good reasons for my wife & I removing our children from school, the positive reasons for home schooling are even more important. We are following a Christian curriculum, which God led us to, and it is instilling good Biblical values into our children. Of course you can share with your children what the Bible teaches even if they are in school, but you are up against  an education system which does not believe what you believe and is daily teaching it’s philosophy to your children. Plus, depending on how much of a talker your child is, you may not even be aware of what they are being taught. Sending Christian children to a secular school could be compared to the people of Israel leaving Egypt, and instead of teaching their children themselves, sending them to school in Cairo five days a week.

God has provided an effective way for our children to be taught to a high standard from a Biblical perspective.

One question you may ask is, “How can you teach your children as well as a trained teacher, especially at secondary school (high school) level, where teachers specialise in specific subjects?” This was certainly a question I had in the past. God may have a different answer for you, or He may not call you to home school your children at all, but in my family’s case, the curriculum itself provided the answer. The curriculum we are following requires me as a parent to be a supervisor, rather than a teacher and there is no need to buy school books from the shops. God has provided an effective way for our children to be taught to a high standard from a Biblical perspective.

If you would like to know more about the curriculum we are using, or  if you have any further questions or thoughts, please feel free to leave a comment.
