God has already forgiven you.

Have you ever felt like God hasn’t really forgiven you? Have you ever thought that maybe you’re just too bad, that you’ve messed up too many times? If you have, I want to assure you that God has already forgiven you. I can say that with confidence, because it is what the Bible says. Whether or not you feel forgiven, has nothing to do with it. You are forgiven because God says that you are forgiven, not because of how you feel. Let’s explore what the Bible has to say on the subject.

Jesus has solved the sin problem for good.

The crucifixation1 John 1:9 give us instructions on what to do if we sin: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness“. Then look at how John begins the next chapter: “I write this, dear children, to guide you out of sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a Priest-Friend in the presence of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous Jesus. When he served as a sacrifice for our sins, he solved the sin problem for good—not only ours, but the whole world’s” (The Message). We have absolutely nothing to worry about, Jesus has solved the sin problem for good. The devil will play on any feelings of guilt that you hold onto, whispering to you that you’re just too bad to be forgiven, etc. But don’t listen to his lies. Tell him that you have already confessed your sins & God has already forgiven you. Even more than just being forgiven, 1 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him“. We are the righteousness of God – that is about as far as you can get from being unforgiven.

All sins are covered by the blood of Jesus.

But you just don’t know what I’ve done, I feel terrible. I’m not worthy of forgiveness“. Let me answer that with three points:

  1. No, I don’t know what you’ve done and neither do I care – it is irrelevant. Read the verses above again, there are no preconditions.
  2. So you feel terrible – get over it! You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, what do you have to feel terrible about?
  3. You think you’re not worthy of forgiveness? I’ll agree with you on that one! No-one is forgiven by God because they’re worthy, we are all forgiven because God loves us.

As He was being crucified, Jesus prayed for those who were crucifying Him, “Father, forgive these people! They don’t know what they’re doing” (Luke 23:34, Contemporary English Version). Is what you’ve done really worse than what they were doing? Even if you think it is, it doesn’t matter, because all sins are covered by the blood of Jesus.

Oh God, please forgive me!

Let’s look at this from a different angle – from the point of view of God. Imagine that you (as God) have very clearly stated that Jesus has already dealt with the sin problem, and yet still Christians don’t seem to get it! “Oh God, please forgive me! I’m just so bad God. I’m so unworthy of your forgiveness. But please, please Lord forgive me, please Lord……“. I think if we were in the position of God, we would find all these prayers begging for forgiveness somewhat irritating, so its a good thing that God is extremely patient and longsuffering (attributes that we need to develop). There is absolutely no need to beg God for forgiveness, doing so is effectively saying that you don’t really believe God when He says that you’re the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. It is not about begging God, it is not about doing penance, it is about receiving your forgiveness.

God is not holding people guilty for their sins.

The message of forgiveness goes even further, because God has actually forgiven the whole world. He is not holding anybody’s sins against them – even the worst person you can think of. Now there are consequences for sinning, because it opens the door to the devil, but none of those consequences are because God is angry. Don’t believe what I just said? Take a look at 2 Corinthians 5:19 “God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold people guilty for their sins. And he gave us this message of peace to tell people.” (Easy to Read Version). God is not holding people guilty for their sins! You may be wondering why people are going to hell, when God has already forgiven them. So let me tell you why. People go to hell for one reason only – because of a refusal to accept Jesus as their Lord & Saviour. There are some who will say that this is not fair, how could a good God send someone to hell, just because they haven’t accepted Jesus. So let’s talk about how fair God is. You deserve to go to hell. No matter how good you want to make out you are, you have committed a vast multitude of sins. But God has offered you a way out, through the sacrifice of Jesus. God did not need to send Jesus and Jesus did not need to come. But God did send Jesus and Jesus did come. If you choose not accept what Jesus has done, it is entirely your decision and when you end up in hell, it will be entirely fair.

Refuse to succumb to feelings that you are not really forgiven, take God at His word, put sin behind you and live for Him.
