Money of itself has no value.
Did you know that you can name your seeds? The Bible says that every seed produces after its own kind; i.e,. if you sow apples seeds, you expect to get apple trees; if you sow love, you expect to receive love. Money is different however, because money of itself has no value. Money’s only value is as something to be exchanged for goods or services. So when you sow money, you can decide how you want your harvest to come – and you do that by naming your seed when you sow it. It is important to give, but we are not supposed to simply drop our money into the offering basket and watch as it disappears down the aisle. We should take the time to pray over our offering, to speak blessing over wherever we are giving it, to believe & thank God for the hundredfold return promised in Mark 10 (see below) and to name our seed. By naming our seed, we will recognise the harvest when it comes in.
“Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” Mark 10:29-30
God provides seed for the sower.
I know that some people will immediately think that this is all about selfish gain, but that is not true. For example, if you want to give a large amount of money for a project your church is doing, but you simply do not have the amount required, you can sow what you are able to give and believe for God to multiple that seed into the amount that you would like to give. 2 Corinthians 9:10 says that God provides seed for the sower and that He multiples our seed sown. Maybe you need (or want) a new car. You could sow your old car and expect to receive a new car, or you could sow money and name the seed ‘a new car’. If you think that God will not give you a new car, read my post ‘Poverty: Blessing or Curse?‘, which contains my personal testimony of how God provided my family with a brand new car. A second hand car would have met our needs, but we believed God for more and we got more.
It is no more wrong for us to expect God to bless us with material possessions than it is for a child to expect presents at Christmas. Look at Matthew 7:11 from the Easy to Read Version: “You people are so bad, but you still know how to give good things to your children. So surely your heavenly Father will give good things to those who ask him“. So the next time you give an offering, name your seed and be on the lookout for the harvest. You can also do this retrospectively. If you keep a record of your giving (and it is very beneficial to do so), go back and start naming the seeds you have sown in the past and start expecting to receive a harvest.
