DISCLAIMER: If you are easily offended, please read 1 Corinthians 13 before continuing.

Like America, Great Britain is a strongly patriotic nation.

Doing the recent campaign for the UK to leave the European Union, and also after it was declared that the UK will indeed leave, I was struck by the distinctly unbritish attitude of many people (Don’t get offended, OK? Maybe you’ve never been taught the good qualities of being British). Many people seemed to take the view that we are ‘just another country’obama-bowing-to-saudi-king. If you are an American you probably understand what I mean. America is a great nation, but I have watched as President Obama has sought to change the world’s view of America and Americans view of their country to ‘just another country’, nothing special. This was epitomised by the image of him (representing America) bowing to the Muslim king of Saudi Arabia. Like America, Great Britain is a strongly patriotic nation and I am saddened that many people seem to have forgotten the history of this great country. We did not make the huge impact on the world that we have made, by being seeing ourselves as ordinary. There is a reason that our national symbol is a lion, there is a reason why we are Great Britain and not just Britain. Just as it is not the British way to view ourselves as ordinary, neither should it be for Christians. As Christians, we too have a lion representing us – but ours is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. As Christians, we are the children of God – we are supposed to be an example to the world of God’s goodness, we are supposed to be far from ordinary. Deuteronomy 28:10 in the Common English Bible says, “All the earth’s peoples will see that you are called by the Lord’s name, and they will be in awe of you“. Study what God says about you in His Word and start seeing yourself that way.

The British way is to have a cup of tea.

In recent years there have been many different versions of the ‘Keep Calm’ poster. The original version of this poster was produced in 1939 in preparation for World War II and although the poster was not widely used, it does epitomise the British spirit. It is not in our nature as a nation to panic. The British way is to have a cup of tea, to keep a stiff upper lip. But following the announcement of the decision to leave the EU, there has been an outpouring of fear and panic. Again, this is a distinctly unbritish attitude. It is also not the attitude we should have as Christians. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind“. As Christians, we need to be rebuking fear anytime it comes anywhere near us (you can read more in my post, ‘It’s Time To Get Rid Of Fear‘). There is absolutely no place for a sense of fear and panic in the life of a Christian. Because God is always with us, having a cup of tea (coffee works too!) when a crisis arises, is exactly the sort of response that we should be having. The British people, and even more so us as Christians, need to reflect the words of 2 Chronicles 32:7, “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed“.

It is not in our nature to subject ourselves to anyone.

britannialon3Another aspect of being British, is the ‘never give up’ spirit, also known as the bulldog spirit (read more in my post, ‘Keep Holding On‘). Probably the most well known example of this attitude was Sir Winston Churchill, but in some people that bulldog spirit seems to have been replaced by the spirit of capitulation exemplified by Neville Chamberlain, who wanted to make a deal with Hitler – Mr Chamberlain probably believed in was doing the right thing, but he was wrong. The song ‘Rule Britannia’, which is like a second national anthem for this country, contains the words, “Britons never never never shall be slaves“. The British people who voted to leave the EU, were extremely uncomfortable with being ruled from Brussels. It is not in our nature to subject ourselves to anyone, we refuse to be slaves to the European Union. Likewise Christians need to remember the words of Galatians 3:13, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law“. We need to remember that it is Satan who is under our feet, not the other way round. When we were sinners, we were slaves to Satan, but that is no longer the case. We have been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:13). We need to stop allowing the curse free reign in our lives.

The EU is an extremely ungodly, anti-Israel institution.

2d7c08db-9d87-43ce-921f-513acca86f7e-2060x1236With regards to the UK’s decision to leave the EU, I have absolutely no doubt that this is the will of God. I have no doubt that it was God who provided us a way out and I am pleased that we have taken it. Without going into details, the EU is an extremely ungodly, anti-Israel institution, which seeks to exert power over it’s member states. It is ruled by unelected officials, who the populations of it’s various countries have absolutely no power to remove. You may argue about MEPs being elected, but that is a deception. MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) have very little real power. With regards to being a Christian, Jesus made it clear in John 17:16, that we are not of this world, and yet many Christians do not see how they can survive outside of the world’s system, just as many British people have voiced their opinion that Great Britain will struggle outside of the EU. Neither of these things are true. Just as Great Britain will flourish as it frees itself from the system of the EU, every Christian who refuses to be part of the world’s system will flourish. God has His own way of doing things, which are completely different from the world’s way of doing things. Study your Bible, find out what God’s ways are and do them. It is when you do that, that your life will begin to change from being ordinary to being extraordinary.

I see Christians living much the same lives as non-Christians.

I realise that I may probably have upset some people in writing this post, but that was not my intention. If you have felt resentment towards me as you read, I urge you to ask God to show you if you are wrong – be open for correction. The EU is like what the world has to offer, it appears to be good (countries working together for mutual benefit), but it is a deception. As an Englishman I have a strong belief in both England and the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, and I hate to see how little some people think of this country. Don’t get me wrong, I am not questioning their love for the country, but the view that we are ‘just another country’, totally dependent on the EU saddens me. In the same way, it is sad to see how many Christians have (unknowingly) allowed Satan to dominate their lives. I see Christians living much the same lives as non-Christians. I see Christians living in poverty, living in sickness. I see Christians who have a desire to do the will of God, but who don’t know how to finance it. It is sad to see Christians who are living under the curse, when Christ has already redeemed us from the curse. If you are British (natural born or not), it is time to rise up and be truly British once more. It is time to believe in this great nation and to believe for a return to our godly heritage (I believe the same is true for Americans). But whether you are British or  not, if you are a Christian, its time to find out exactly what it means to be a Christian. Find out how different from the world, you really are supposed to be and then start living like it!
