It’s right there, as plain as day – if you’re reading with your mind open.
Did you know that the Bible contains a formula for success? Well it does! And it’s not one of these hidden things, where you need to understand the original Hebrew or Greek text, to reveal a secret either. It’s right there, as plain as day – if (and this is a vital ‘if’) you’re reading with your mind open. So where is this formula for success? God’s formula for success is found in 3 John 2:
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.“
The J.B. Phillips translation puts it this way, “My heartfelt prayer for you, my very dear friend, is that you may be as healthy and prosperous in every way as you are in soul“. From this verse we can conclude that the level of your prosperity and health, is directly related to the level that your soul prospers. Do you have any health issues? If so, you need for your soul to prosper. Could you be prospering more financially than you currently are? Then your soul needs to prosper more too.

If you want your soul to prosper, then you have to spend time in the Word.
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.“
The bottom line is, if you want your soul to prosper, then you have to spend time in the Word. This must include time spent reading the Bible, but can also include time spent reading good quality Christian books and listening to good quality Christian CDs & DVDs, television & internet broadcasts etc. You may ask how to know if something is good quality – but that’s simple, if it fills you with faith, then it is good. On the other hand, if it fills you with doubt, worry, fear, unbelief, or any other negative emotion, then don’t read or listen to any more of it.
Any form of prosperity outside of this formula is not from God and will inevitably bring sorrow.
The amount of time you spend in the Word and listening to the Word being preached in faith, will have a direct affect on how healthy you are and how prosperous you are.
That is preciously what John was saying in 3 John 2 – that he wished (or prayed, as the my centre column reference says) that his readers would prosper and be in health, as their soul prospered. Any form of prosperity outside of this formula is not from God, and will inevitably bring sorrow, but the prosperity that comes from God is totally sorrow-free. Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it“. Likewise you can be healthy now, but if you are not spending time in God’s Word, it will not last. The more time you spend in God’s Word, the healthier you are going to be. So let me give you a simple piece of advice:
Rather than waste time arguing about so-and-so who was a good Christian and sick all their life, get in the Word and start seeing things improve.
This formula will not work if you do not put what you read or hear into practice.
If you want your life to be changed, to be transformed, put into practice what Romans 12:2 says, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind“. I like how The Message translates Romans 12:1-2, “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you“. Of course as with any formula, this formula will not work if you do not put what you read or hear into practice. James 1:22 in the Easy to Read Version says, “Do what God’s teaching says; don’t just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves“.
MORE OF GOD’S WORD = BETTER HEALTH + MORE PROSPERITY
That is the Biblical formula for success, based on 3 John 2 and Joshua 1:8 – put it onto practice, increase the level of Biblical input into your life and, with patience, you will see the results.
