This is one of a series of five short articles that I was asked to write for my church on specific subjects relating to tithes & offerings.
Tithing is not about giving God ten percent and trying to survive on the remaining ninety percent.
There are many Christians that take the view that we do not need to tithe today. But those who take this view are missing the whole point of tithing – namely that tithing is designed to be a blessing, not a chore. So instead of looking at why we should be tithing, let’s look at how God desires to bless us through the tithe. Malachi 3:10-11 in The Message has this to say:
“Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don’t open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. For my part, I will defend you against marauders, protect your wheat fields and vegetable gardens against plunderers.”
Tithing is not about giving God ten percent and trying to survive on the remaining ninety percent. It is about giving God ten percent, and in so doing, connecting to a system that God has set up to pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. The tithe is not about taking from you, it is about getting God’s blessings to you. It does, however, involve taking a step of faith and trusting God that you will not go short when you tithe.
All churches take up offerings, but many churches do not teach on giving at all.
Of course it is true, that part of the reason that we tithe, is to provide funding for the running of the church that we attend. But it is not a system designed by Man in order to get money, by compelling people to give. It is a system designed by God, which will not only meet the needs of the local church, but also abundantly bless the tithers themselves. All churches take up offerings, but many churches do not teach on giving at all and the consequence, is that they then rely on other methods to raise funds, often just for the upkeep of the church building. It’s so much simpler just to do things God’s way!
Tithing is about putting God first.
A common discussion concern tithing, is about whether we should be giving before or after tax, on gross or net income. But if you need to ask the question, you are not fully convinced that tithing is a blessing rather than a chore. There really is no question – tithing is about putting God first, and that means before the government. If you want to study this you will find multiple references in the Bible to giving God the FIRST fruits.
Expect to receive what God has promised.
Let’s conclude by briefly detailing what’s involved in tithing. Whether you tithe by standing order, or physically put the tithe into the offering basket, it is vital that you take the time to pray over your tithe – at home, not just quickly during the offering time. Tithing is more that just giving ten percent of whatever income you receive; as you come to God with your tithe begin by thanking Him for any income you have received (not just your salary) and for the opportunity to tithe. Thank Him for the all blessings that He has promised to the tither, then declare blessing over the church where you are giving your tithe – the place that you attend regularly. Fully expect to receive, what God has promised – start trusting God by tithing and give Him the opportunity to bless and increase you.
