But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
It can be so easy to drift through life without giving much thought to what happens when this life is over. The end of our lives here on Earth usually seems so distant from now, that it gets pushed it to the back of our minds. We can ignore it all we like though, but one day this life is going to be over and we will be faced with eternity. Most people have insurance for things like their homes and their cars, and they have life insurance for themselves to provide for their families in the event of their unfortunate demise. Isn’t it foolish though, to make all those plans for what may or may not happen during our life here, but not take out an insurance policy concerning our eternal destination? The insurance policy I am talking about is actually an assurance policy. It is the assurance that when this life concludes, however that happens, you will go to heaven – not maybe, not probably, but definitely.
There are numerous reasons why people think they are going to heaven.
Can we really have any guarantee that we will go to heaven though? Can we really be 100% sure? The answer is that yes, we can be 100% sure. We can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we will definitely go to heaven when we die (or when Jesus returns). So how can we be so sure? There are some who will say that they will go to heaven because they’re a good person. Others will say it’s because they go to church, others because they always pray to Jesus. In fact there are numerous reasons why people think they are going to heaven. But the truth is that none of these things are going to get you into heaven. They are all offering you false hope – to be blunt, they are offering you heaven, but keeping you on the path the hell. You may think that your destination will probably be heaven because of what a good person you are; but the truth is, that if you are relying on how good you are, your destination will not be heaven. Isaiah 64:6 in the Easy to Read Version has this to say about our efforts to be good, “We are all dirty with sin. Even our good works are not pure. They are like bloodstained rags“.
How do we receive this gift of eternal life?
No-one can claim to be without sin, we have all done things that are wrong. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” and what is the consequence of our sin? Romans 6:23 gives the answer, “The wages of sin is death“. But then Romans 6:23 continues and gives us good news, “But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord“. So how do we receive this gift of eternal life? Simple – follow the instructions in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved“. You may have many questions about God, the Bible or Christianity, but do not allow these things to distract you. God can show you the answers to your questions, the important question that you need to be asking is, are you 100% sure that if you were to die today you would go to heaven.
