God has been extremely patient, but it will soon become time for Him to act.

004Are you carrying out God’s plan for your life, or are you walking through life in a daze, as one day just blurs into the next? If it’s the latter, then it’s time to wake up. In ‘Jesus Is Coming Back……Eventually‘ we looked at the imminent return of Jesus Christ to take His Church to Heaven. We do not have the time to spare that people had in the past, time is short. The world is continuing it’s downward spiral, faster and faster. I read an interesting blog post recently on this topic by Tim Burt, it was called “We Have All Been Seduced and Here’s Proof“. I was interested to learn that Hollywood actually had standards once – as in an actual code of standards, intended to uphold moral standards – until they abandoned it. Today, Hollywood is one of the biggest pushers of immoral standards and perversion. The point is, things cannot continue the way they are going for much longer, without Mankind destroying itself. In the days of Noah, God was patient, He gave people time to repent. But eventually that time ran out and God had to act, because if He didn’t, Mankind would have destroyed itself. That is the position we are in today. God has been extremely patient, but it will soon become time for Him to act, it will be time for Him to deal with the evil in the world once and for all.

Nothing that God gives you to do will ever be insignificant.

You may have some idea of God’s plan for your life, or you may not. Whether or not you can see the big picture, is not what is important. The important thing is that you do whatever God has told you to do at the moment. It may seem like something totally insignificant – but it isn’t, nothing that God gives you to do will ever be insignificant. God needs all of us to play our part in what He plans to do before the end comes and things become a lot tougher for those who have not made Jesus their Lord & Saviour. If you are not sure what the next step God has for you is, pray about it. God will show you what He wants you to do and the chances are, He will only show you one step at a time. There are occasions when God will reveal a bit more of the big picture, but more often than not, He wants us to have the faith to take the step that He has given us, before knowing what will come later.

You may see yourself as unimportant, but that is not how God sees you.

Oh, no Matthew, God doesn’t need me. I’m sure that I’m not important at all“. Yes you are! You are a part of His plan and He needs you to play your part. What if Noah had decided that building the ark was too big a job for him? What if Abraham had settled for Ishmael and never developed the faith to believe for Isaac? What if Joshua and Caleb had gone with the flow and agreed with the bad report the other ten spies brought back? We could go on and on. You may see yourself as unimportant, but that is not how God sees you. It is time to see yourself through God’s eyes, see yourself as more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37), see yourself as the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), see yourself as the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21), etc, etc. So read the New Testament and start confessing what God says about you. “Wait a minute! Jesus is the light of the world, not me! It would be blasphemous for me to say it about myself!“. Look up the verse – you may think that it is only Jesus who is referred to as the light of the world, but that’s not what He said.

Jesus is your Lord, or at least He should be.

Look, the thing is I’d rather do things my own way. What if I don’t like God’s plan for me?“. Let me put this bluntly: YOU DON’T HAVE A CHOICE! OK, that is not completely correct, because God has given us freewill and so you can choose to completely ignore Him if you so desire, but to do so would be extremely disrespectful to Him. Jesus is your Lord (or at least He should be), which means that you do what He tells you to do. Imagine a soldier telling his commanding officer that he doesn’t want to get up early, that he’d rather have a lie-in – that soldier is going to be in a lot of trouble! Likewise when we ignore what God is saying to us, we too can end up in a lot of trouble. Not from God, but because we make ourselves vulnerable to the devil’s attacks. After all, we have already obeyed the devil by listening to him and disobeying God.

Find out what God wants you to do and do it.

But aside from the fact that you cannot truthfully call Jesus your Lord, unless you are doing what He says, His plan offers you the best life possible. Let’s look at what the Bible has to say about God’s plans for us:

  • For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future“. Jeremiah 29:11, New International Version
  • I will always guide you and satisfy you with good things. I will keep you strong and well. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring of water that never goes dry“. Isaiah 58:11, Good News Translation
  • The Lord guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him“. Psalm 37:23, Good News Translation
  • The fact is, that what we are, we owe to the hand of God upon us. We are born afresh in Christ, and born to do those good deeds which God planned for us to do“. Ephesians 2:10, J.B. Phillips Translation

My message today is a simple one: Find out what God wants you to do (i.e. the next step He has for you) and do it. You cannot wait until you are older, until you’re married, until you get a house, until you get that promotion or whatever excuse it is. God needs you to start now. Finally, read and meditate on this passage from The Message, which sums up what I have been saying here:

But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!” Romans 13:11-14.
